I love the power of the outdoors. I love the headspace it gives, the inspiration and beauty you can find, the physical challenges it offers, and the time you can share with loved ones and friends.

When I spend more time outside, I feel like my time is richer - days stretch to feel like weeks. It’s this love for time outside that started Tough Soles in the first place. Carl and I wanted a place to document the Irish outdoors, and help others get out there too.

To understand the Irish outdoor community more, I want to start an annual survey to see what we’re all doing, where we’re going, and what might help more people to sustainably access nature in the future.

The first Big Irish Outdoor Survey is live, and running until the end of September 2026

Tough Soles is a collaboration between Ellie Berry and Carl Lange. The couple first walked 4,000km along every National Waymarked Trail in Ireland between 2017 - 2019. In 2023, Ellie climbed all 275 mountains on the Vandeleur-Lynam List in 51 days, setting a new national record at that time. In 2026 they premiered a short film about Vandeleur-Lynam Project, made with Outsider.ie. Tough Soles continues to document the Irish outdoors, with the goal of inspiring others to find their place in nature.
